The traditional costume, especially that of the women, has given Volendam international fame and became the symbol of Holland. From the beginning of the nineteenth century, the people of Volendam remained faithful to their traditional costume. The clothing was embellished and made more elegant and gradually formed into the specific Volendammer clothing that was worn until the sixties of the last century and is now invariably established as the Volendammer traditional costume.
Due to the isolated location of Volendam, due to the character of the Volendam people with their pride and their pursuit of the best and wanting to be the best, the Volendam people have preserved their own customs, their dialect and their traditional costumes.
The famous and unique cigar band house is located in a separate wing of the museum. Here you can visit many striking places and buildings made from cigar bands, such as St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, the Tower of Pisa and Manneken Pis in Brussels.
A total of 11.5 million cigar bands were used to produce all the mosaics. But not only the walls are covered in plaster, but also the lampshade, table, plates and bottles. Everywhere you look you see cigar bands!
